Chapter Ten

Kathleen stood in the kitchen with Mum and Ruby. She and Ruby had been tasked with peeling the potatoes for supper.

Jessica had been sent out to the garden to pick other vegetables they would need. She rushed back inside with her basket full. Tomatoes, peas, carrots, onions, garlic, as well as rhubarb to make a pie. “Kathleen has company, Mum.” Her face was beaming from ear to ear.

Kathleen couldn’t imagine who would be visiting her. Certainly not anyone to cause Jessica to smile so wide. “Who?”

“I don’t know. He’s talking to Dat. But he drove up in a shiny red sports car.”

Kathleen widened her eyes. A sports car? Who could it be? The only people she knew who drove cars were Englishers, and the only Englishers she knew who would drive a sports car were doctors. What doctor would be visiting her?

Mum said, “Are you expecting anyone?”

“Ne. Maybe he has the wrong place.”

Jessica shook her head. “I heard him mention your name.”

Ruby set down the potato she was peeling and dried her hands. “Kathleen has an admirer.” She headed for the front room. “I want to see him.”

An admirer? Not likely. Kathleen wiped her hands on a towel and followed Ruby. Jessica and Mum followed as well. Ruby drew back the curtain, and all four of them peered out the front window.

“Who is it?” Jessica asked.

“Do you know him?” Ruby asked.

Kathleen shifted into a better position to see. The large black walnut tree out front blocked her view of Dat and the man, so she moved to the other end of the window and pulled the curtain back there.

Dat and the man strolled toward the house.

When they came into view, the man looked familiar. Then he smiled.

Kathleen sucked in a breath, dropped the curtain and stepped back, all in one motion.

Ruby studied her. “I’d say Kathleen knows him.”

“Who is he?” Mum asked.

Kathleen swallowed. “Ethan Parker. He was one of the doctors in the hospital I did my residency in.”

“He’s cute,” Jessica said.

“Come away from the window.” Mum shooed her hands toward them. “You don’t want him to catch you all gawking. Back into the kitchen. All of you.”

Jessica and Ruby dutifully obeyed.

Mum caught Kathleen’s arm and slowed her down. “Who is this Dr. Parker?”

“Just a doctor.”

“He’s gone out of his way to see you.”

“We don’t know he came to see me.”

Mum planted her hands on her hips and gave her a look.

“All right. He must have come to see me. But I don’t know why. I certainly never expected him.”

With the sound of footsteps on the porch, Mum quickly ushered Kathleen back into the kitchen. Then spoke to all three of them. “Hush now, girls. No talking about this man.”

Ruby spoke up. “Then I’ll talk about Jonathan. I’m very excited about getting married this fall.”

Kathleen had met Jonathan a couple of times this summer but hadn’t gotten to really know him. When he visited, he spent all his time with Ruby, gazing at her.

The front door opened and closed.
